A recap of Lillie's life written by her son Michael in a letter to Boband Robbie Gehlsen: Quote.

"As far as my late Mother and I, there is nothing exceptional. Lilliewas the eldest girl. Since she was the oldest, much responsibilitywas given to her as far as the care of the other children. UncleRalph and Mother were depended on by both of their parents. From whatI understand the farming was very rough during those times and then myGrandmother developed breast cancer, (incidentally a big problem inthe Armbruster and especially the Fuchtman families). It was myGrandmother's wish that my Mother, Lillie, become a nurse because ofher deteriorating health. In the meantime Grandfater was trying toget all kinds of treatment for Grandmother. Lillie returned to thefarm after graduating from Nursing School to take care of her dyingMother. The beginning of the "Thirties" was rough years for thefamily. Mother was raising the children, taking care of her Motherwhile her Father was losing the farm. There was little happinessfound. Those memories influenced my Mother for the rest of her life. After my Grandmother died and my Grandfather lost the farm, my Motherwas able to relocate in Denver, Colorado. It was there in 1936 thatshe met my Father, Michael Robert Altmayer, who was in the Army and apatient at Fitzsimmons General Hospital. They married and then inorder to be near my Father who was to be stationed in California, theymoved to San Francisco. I was born in this beautiful City onNovermber 10, 1937, and of course Mother stayed on while my Father wastransfered all over. Don't forget World War II was imminent at thistime. During this time, Mother went back to work, she was able tofind a very nice family to take care of me and then on weekends shewould spend her time with me. My parents marriage was not successfuldue to many factors and they decided to end they marriage when I wasonly five years of age. Because my Father was quite immature andirresponsible, my care became the sole burden of my mother. Manyyears later we heard that my Father died.

Mother continued nursing, she was excellent and a compassionate nurse. If anyone asked me what her most admirable trait or quality was, Iwould immediately say "compassion". She never forgot anyone or denieda request or favor. Her life was dedicated to me and everyone elsewho happened to become a part of her existance.

Four years ago she went to Idaho and she and Aunt Sophia and UncleRalph drove down to South Dakota. I am convinced that she plannedthis, knowing intuitatively it would be her last trip to see herfamily. It was unfortunate that they couldn't continue to Iowa butUncle Ralpoh's arthritic knee was giving him a great deal of pain. Then in December she went to the Doctor because of severe pain anddiscomfort and at that time with one lung gone was diagnosed asterminal Cancer of the lung. Three weeks later she succumbed to thedisease. She was a very strong and stubborn woman and refused allheroics to extend her life. If she had Chem, because radiation wasout of the question, she might have lived a month longer." Unquote.

Lillie operated a home for the elderly in her private home afterretiring from active nursing. She also assisted her son with
his Flower Shop.
